Dionne Farris, “Blackbird”
March 28th, 2008 !“Blackbird singing in the dead of night. Take these broken wings and learn to fly. All your life you’ve always waited for this moment to arise.”
I woke up this morning with this song in my head and have played it, repeatedly, all day. I don’t know what happened or how it happened, but here is my confession.
Over the years, this song has in no way been part of my regular rotation, nor had it made much of an impression on me from the first listening (or maybe it had, all sneaky-like). Now today it’s as if while I was sleeping, the lyrics were translated into a language that I could understand. A few simple, archetypal verses having to do with freedom, nothing complicated, but this is the power of simplicity and the fundamental. The blues.
With a few choice words, sparse accompaniment, and bare soul, a discreet fullness may arise.
Next week I promise to return with something a little more greasy.
